Increasing the speed of procurement digialization at EnBW with Procure Ai

Trustful collaboration and Procure Ai’s AI-native Procurement Automation Platform enhance operational procurement processes at EnBW

Customer: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG
Industry: Energy & Utilities
Location: Karlsruhe, Germany
Revenue: €32 billion
Employees: 26,000

The challenge: Transform procurement into an intelligence hub

EnBW, one of Germany’s largest energy companies with €32 billion in annual revenue and over 26,000 employees, was under growing pressure to modernize its procurement processes to make the function more agile, transparent, and intelligent. Like many utilities, EnBW was navigating the energy transition—phasing out coal and scaling up renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. At the same time, competition for suppliers and infrastructure resources was intensifying—driven by the pace of government spending and the race to net zero. This meant EnBW needed to act fast to secure the right suppliers.

To meet these demands, EnBW set out to transform procurement from “order writers” into proactive, efficient experts who could support business growth and sustainability goals. They knew technology would be critical to making this shift and achieving their future growth ambitions.

The approach: Implement a scalable AI-native Procurement Automation Platform

EnBW decided to partner with Procure Ai to transform its procurement process. Procure Ai provides a connected and secure AI platform that meets all the company’s current needs. With its platform approach, Procure Ai is able to provide additional capabilities alongside new requirements and to co-innovate novel use cases with EnBW. This enables EnBW to partner holistically with one solution provider instead of investing into multiple disconnected providers and tools.

Procure Ai developed the world’s 1st AI-native Procurement Automation Platform in close collaboration with EnBW. The platform enables:

  • Automated negotiations, which reduces manual effort in mid-to-low-value tenders and facilitates faster, more consistent outcomes.
  • Smart information provisioning, which helps procurement teams optimize tender design based on past outcomes and supplier behavior.
  • Framework contract recommendations, which supports better use of existing agreements to streamline sourcing.

The AI use cases were designed to seamlessly integrate with and complement EnBW’s existing procurement stack, including Ivalua and SAP S4, to lay the groundwork for a unified user interface and seamless process orchestration across systems.

Collaborative development and co-innovation

The partnership between EnBW and Procure Ai is defined by continuous collaboration. Real-time feedback from users informs ongoing enhancements, ensuring the platform evolves in line with business needs. This co-innovation model has helped EnBW respond quickly to market demands while steadily increasing procurement maturity.

EnBW has since started exploring new ways for exploiting its data and optimizing the procurement process even further with Procure Ai. Applications include spend and data visualization, contextual search, and intake management.

The results: Efficiency gains and strategic maturity

The implementation of Procure Ai’s AI-native Procurement Automation Platform has delivered measurable improvements, including:

  • Time savings: Automated negotiations save EnBW the equivalent of 1-2 FTE (5,600 hours annually).
  • Cost savings: Through autonomous tail spend negotiations and intelligent price management, procurement has achieved average cost savings of 5.3% across key spend categories.
  • Process efficiency: The platform enables faster, more precise, and agile procurement of materials and services, reducing bottlenecks.
  • Improved decision-making: The Procure Ai platform provides EnBW with clear insights into the procurement process, enabling the company to identify trends, issues, and opportunities in real-time and make informed decisions.
  • Innovation and adaptability: Co-development of new AI capabilities, such as automated requirements capture, ensures continuous improvement and agility amidst changing market conditions.

Our conclusion: A win-win partnership

The collaboration between EnBW and Procure Ai has delivered clear, measurable improvements in procurement efficiency, transparency, and decision-making. By automating negotiations, optimizing tender design, and integrating AI into core purchasing processes, EnBW has shifted procurement from a transactional role to a more strategic, data-driven function.

With proven results in transactional tenders and seamless integration with existing systems, the platform now serves as a scalable foundation for further digitalization. EnBW plans to extend its use to additional business areas and continue co-developing new capabilities with Procure Ai—ensuring procurement remains aligned with the company’s broader growth, digitalization, and infrastructure goals.

This partnership demonstrates the value of a focused, collaborative approach to applying AI in complex, evolving procurement environments.
